Education has always been of paramount importance in Jaffna. The region has a tradition of academic excellence, particularly in languages, literature, and religious studies.
SLIIT has an honored history and a continued thirst for achievement characterized by the tireless pursuit of accreditations & collaborations.
It is the first Sri Lankan University to be accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology UK, for Information Technology degrees. Its degrees are also approved by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act & the Ministry of Education. SLIIT is ranked first in QS South Asia rankings in the non-state sector.
The University is a Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and International Association of Universities (IAU). SLIIT offers a wide range of study areas, including Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees in Computing, Business, Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Psychology, Law, Nursing, Education and Sciences. SLIIT also connects people both locally and globally. They have more than 50 industry partners and collaborative agreements with foreign universities to broaden our horizons.
Since its inception in 1999, SLIIT has successfully established an environment that is conducive to learning throughout all its campuses and centers. The institute has two campuses in Malabe and Colombo and four regional centres including SLIIT Northern UNI Jaffna.
Having started out with a mere 400 students, today, the institute boasts a student population of over 15,000. Together with superior research facilities and optimum resources, SLIIT is able to encourage students to reach new heights in both innovation and excellence.
In collaboration with Northern UNI, SLIIT brings modern facilities, experienced lecturers and an educational experience that is available in Colombo and Malabe to Jaffna. These are 4-year programmes with the flexibility to exit and/or rejoin at each level and continue through to graduation.

Professor Gamage has made significant contributions to the promotion of the IT industry and has served the Sri Lankan government in various influential capacities. He has held prestigious positions such as Chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), the Lanka Software Foundation (LSF), the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT), the ICT Cluster, and the Executive Director of the Trade Information Network of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in establishing Conceptnursery, Sri Lanka’s first technology incubator, and nurturing numerous successful technology companies. In 2020, his unwavering dedication and contributions to the development of Sri Lanka’s IT industry earned him the distinguished ‘Most Outstanding ICT Contributor of the Year award at the NBQSA, the prestigious National ICT Awards Organised by the Sri Lanka Section of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.
