Northern UNI Marks Its 3rd Anniversary on 18th May 2026

For generations, education has been the backbone and the dream of the Tamil Community of Sri Lanka, as well as the ambition of every household. With the vision of reviving the North’s proud educational legacy and creating new opportunities for future generations, Northern UNI began its journey three years ago with a dream. Today, that dream has become true and has brought in the educational momentum by Northern Uni.

On 18th May, Northern UNI proudly celebrates its 3rd Anniversary, marking three remarkable years of empowering students, transforming lives, and building a brighter future for not only the Northern and Eastern youngsters of Sri Lanka but also for the youths dreaming of higher education in the whole country.

A Journey Built on Vision & Purpose

Northern UNI was established with a powerful mission that no talented student should be denied higher education due to financial hardship, social barriers, or geographical limitations. Over the past three years, Northern UNI has become more than an educational institution. It has evolved into a hub of hope for students and families across the region, creating pathways to internationally recognized higher education while uplifting communities through opportunities, financial support, internship trainings, and job opportunities. From humble beginnings, Northern UNI has grown into a vibrant academic hub that continues to shape the future of hundreds of students.

Reviving the Educational Legacy of the North and the entire country

The North has always been known for its deep-rooted academic excellence and intellectual heritage. Northern UNI was founded with the purpose of restoring and strengthening this tradition in the modern era. By combining quality education, innovation, industry-relevant learning, and student-centered support systems, Northern UNI continues to nurture the next generation of leaders, professionals, and changemakers.

Celebrating Students, Achievements & Excellence

Maintaining academic excellence without compromise remains a core principle of Northern UNI. To encourage continuous dedication, commitment, and outstanding academic performance, students who obtain a GPA above 3.70 at the end of every semester are recognized and honoured through inclusion in the prestigious Dean’s List.

Among the students selected for the Dean’s List:

• The top 1% receive 100% scholarships
• The second 1% receive 50% scholarships
• The third 1% receive 25% scholarships

This initiative reflects Northern UNI’s commitment to nurturing a culture of academic excellence and rewarding high-performing students for their hard work and dedication. This year, among the students of Business studies and Information Technology Degree Programs were selected among the overall SLIIT student population from each batch semester examinations as follows.

• 15–35% from the Business Studies of SLIIT Northern UNI
• 2–10% are from the Information Technology (IT) of SLIIT Northern UNI

These remarkable achievements stand as a testament to the academic standards, student dedication, and supportive learning environment fostered at Northern UNI. Such recognition not only celebrates student success but also inspires healthy competition, motivation, and a stronger passion for learning among the entire student community.

Laying the Foundation for Staff and Student Research Publications

As an academic institution progressing towards the future, Northern UNI places strong emphasis not only on delivering high-quality education and producing highly employable graduates, but also on cultivating a vibrant research culture among both staff and students.

Encouraging active engagement in research enables students to develop innovative and analytical thinking in line with recent advancements in their respective fields of study. It further inspires them to contribute meaningfully to the expanding body of knowledge through quality research publications that meet the standards of the contemporary scientific community.

Northern UNI actively promotes research among its academic staff by providing scholarly platforms such as the Journal Club, where research ideas are critically discussed, refined, and strengthened through collaborative academic engagement. In addition, the University continuously supports and encourages both staff and students to present and publish their research findings at local and international conferences, as well as in reputed indexed journals. Through these initiatives, Northern UNI aims to foster a dynamic research environment that contributes to academic excellence and global knowledge dissemination.

Industry Engagement through Strategic Memoranda of Understanding

Northern UNI has taken significant steps towards bridging the gap between academia and industry through the initiation of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading organizations such as BBK Innovate,

These collaborations are intended to provide students with valuable industrial exposure, enabling them to gain practical insights, hands-on experience, and a deeper understanding of real-world business, information technology, and technological environments. Through these MoUs, students are expected to benefit from internship opportunities, industrial visits, guest lectures conducted by industry experts, collaborative research initiatives, and various skill development programmes.

Furthermore, such initiatives are expected not only to strengthen the employability of graduates, but also to foster innovation, professional networking, and career readiness in alignment with current industry demands

Developing Sports and Other Extracurricular Activities

Facilities and opportunities are provided for indoor games, cricket, football, and various student engagement activities that help nurture confidence, discipline, and leadership qualities.

Scholarships & Financial Support That Transform Lives

Northern UNI strongly believes that education should be accessible to every deserving student. To support this vision, the institution offers multiple scholarships and financial assistance schemes designed to empower talented students from all backgrounds.

Scholarship 1: Performers Scholarship

This scholarship is a blessing for students who obtain 3A passes in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in any stream and secure the top three district rankings. These students shall receive:

• 100% Tuition fee waiver
• A monthly allowance of Rs. 50,000 for accommodation and other essential needs, depending on their family background as well as their residential area distance from Northern Uni.

This allows the students to continue their higher education without any financial burden or concern.

Scholarship 2: Recognition for Multifaceted Talents

True education extends beyond classroom learning. For students who qualify for university admission but are unable to secure placement, Northern UNI recognizes achievements in their extra-curricular activities. Based on their accomplishments and points earned in their extra-curricular activities, students are awarded tuition fee reductions ranging from 50 to 100% scholarships.

Yarl Education Support (YES) Fund

Northern UNI also introduced the Yarl Education Support (YES) Fund to ensure that financially deprived students are not deprived of higher education opportunities.

Through partnerships with leading banks:

• Students can obtain educational loans for the first two years
• Northern UNI covers the expenses for the remaining two years
• The students shall pay the interest to the bank from which the loan has been obtained for the first two years.
• The students shall repay the loan to the bank in accordance with the terms and conditions agreed upon with the respective Bank.

This initiative provides tremendous relief and confidence to students and their families.

Government Interest-Free Higher Education Loan Scheme

This year, the Northern Uni has been recognised as one of the educational institutions that can have students to pursueDegree Programs through the Government Interest Free Higher Education Loan Scheme. Students who complete their Advanced Level Examination can also pursue degree programs at Northern UNI through the government’s Interest-Free Higher Education Loan Scheme.

Under this scheme:

• The government bears the loan interest
• Students can repay the loan through affordable instalments after completing their studies

This serves as a valuable opportunity for students to achieve their higher education aspirations without immediate financial pressure.

Open Day Offers

To celebrate this milestone, Northern UNI is offering exclusive fee concessions for students who participate in the Open Day and register on the same day. The Special Offers Include:

• 15% Discount on first semester fees for SLIIT City Uni programs
• 20% Discount on first semester fees for SLIIT University programs

This initiative aims to make higher education more accessible and affordable for aspiring students.

As part of the 3rd Anniversary celebrations, Northern UNI is proud to organize its 3rd Consecutive Annual Blood Donation Campaign on 15th May. This meaningful initiative reflects Northern UNI’s continued commitment towards social responsibility, compassion, and community wellbeing. More than just an academic institution, Northern UNI strives to nurture socially conscious individuals who understand the value of giving back to society. The blood donation camp witnesses the humanity and social responsibility of the staff and students in a lifesaving activity. Three years may be a short period in history, but for the Northern Province and the whole country, the Northern UNI represents transformation, resilience, and hope during the last three years.
